Football: USA Beat Canada, Will Play Japan in Final

Christine Sinclair, Canada's captain and star player, gave Canada the lead midway through the first half. But the USA came back early in the second half with a goal credited to Megan Rapinoe, but in reality was an own goal, bouncing off a Canadian defender's legs. Sinclair scored again with a header in the 67th minute. However, Rapinoe was also not finished and got one in a mere 3 minutes later. But Sinclair scored again with another header into the net at the 72 minute. After a controversial call for an indirect kick within the Canadian penalty box, an even more controversial penalty was called for hand ball. Abby Wambach took the shot and got it in to bring it even again at 3-3. There it stayed until the end of regular time.

Both teams came out strong at the start of extra time but it stayed even for the first half of extra time. A lot of pain and injuries happened on both teams in the second half of extra time, but no change on the scoreboard until stoppage time when Alex Morgan heads one in to give USA the lead the first time in the game and the game winner.

Japan won their semi-final against France 2-1, with France missing a penalty kick in the second half that would have evened the game out. Eugénie Le Sommer was taken down by Saki Kumagai inside the box, but France's captain, Élise Bussaglia shot wide of the goal, taking away France's best chance to level things with the world champion Japanese.

The final between Japan and the USA will be played on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at 21:45 Great Britain time.

  1. Great game Canada! You took it right to them and could have won the game if decisions went the other way
